MEET THE PRESENTER

Camille Scent, EdS, LPC, LMFT

Camille is a Certified EFT Supervisor in private practice on the north side of Atlanta, Georgia, and a founding board member of the Atlanta Center for EFT (ACEFT) where she serves as a clinical helper at Atlanta-based training events. Her practice, Wise Heart Families, specializes in EFT with couples and adult families. A former Montessori elementary and middle school teacher (and homeschooling mom to two adult sons), Camille’s passion for science informs every aspect of her work with clients as she seeks to understand and apply insights from affective neuroscience research to enhance the effectiveness of psychotherapy. She was introduced to polyvagal theory the same year she took the Externship in EFT (2013) and has been exploring the intersection of PVT with attachment science and the practice of EFT ever since.

DESCRIPTION

As Dr. Sue Johnson wrote in the book, Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love, “The drama of love is all about this hunger for safe emotional connection, a survival imperative we experience from the cradle to the grave. Loving connection is the only safety nature ever offers us.” Using polyvagal theory, originated by Dr. Stephan Porges, draws the autonomic nervous system directly into the work of therapy, helping clients re-pattern their nervous systems, build capacities for regulation, and create autonomic pathways of safety and connection.

Polyvagal theory is about the science of safety. This revolutionary theory provides an amazingly relevant and accessible description of and explanation for the physiology of threat and the imperative of connection required for humans to feel safe. This safety is critical to relationship security. Learning about this science deepens our understanding of the physiological phenomenon driving what we see in our therapy work with couples and enhances our ability to effectively work with it.

Polyvagal theory helps therapists work effectively with and understand:

  • How stress and trauma changes a client's physiological responses
  • How the nervous system reactions affect social engagement
  • Ways neuroception helps clients understand their physiological response to risk
  • The physiological component of intuition
  • How personal narratives and internal working models originate in the body
  • Use of psychoeducation to help transform the brain
  • Why facial expression is the portal to a client's inner world and emotional state
  • The purpose co-regulation in therapy and between partners

This training--the first of its kind--will teach clinicians how to incorporate a polyvagal perspective to enhance the practice of  emotionally focused couples therapy.

Program Objectives:

1.     Explain the polyvagal theory concepts of neuroception, hierarchy, and co-regulation.
2.     Identify and describe autonomic nervous system states and associated body responses.
3.     Identify qualities of autonomic states with attachment strategies seen in EFT
4.     Apply the concept of neuroception and autonomic state change to a couple’s negative interaction pattern.
5.     Recognize the function of the vagal brake and its role in managing autonomic states.
6.     Explain the impact of autonomic state on co-regulation in the context of EFCT.
7.     Identify hypotheses about clients’ autonomic states in session and use this to inform choices of EFT interventions.
