DESCRIPTION

The term collective trauma refers to the psychological reactions to a traumatic event that affect an entire society; it does not merely reflect a historical fact, the recollection of a terrible event that happened to a group of people. Well known collective traumas include: the Holocaust, the Armenian genocide, slavery in the United States, the Nanjing Massacre, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Trail of Tears, the Great Irish Famine, attack on Pearl Harbor, the MS Estonia in Sweden, Communist governments, the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, and more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.

The term 'intergenerational (or transgenerational) trauma' is used to refer to
the generally subconscious transmission of traumatic experiences to subsequent generations and to society. People in the next generation find themselves showing the symptoms of trauma without having experienced the trauma themselves.

One of the goals of working with couples within an emotionally focused framework is to help each partner get in touch with their vulnerable emotions. Achieving this goal is particularly difficult when partners have past trauma. If the trauma is from a previous generation, as in the case of intergenerational transmission, it is even more challenging for the patient to connect to self and to explore this impact on their partner and the relationship.

In this seminar, presenter Judith Kellner will demonstrate how past trauma emerges in the life of future generations, how it plays out in intimate relationships, as well as how to help clients stay with their emotional experience when  vulnerability comes alive in session. Judith's overarching goal as a therapist is to help liberate  individuals experiencing the affects of collective trauma and assert their voices in their intimate relationships.

Judith will use her extensive knowledge and show her own clinical work (sessions videos) to help participants work effectively with the "radioactivity" of the intergenerational transmission of collective trauma.
