DESCRIPTION

As couples therapists we are often challenged with complex relationship dynamics. With the addition of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), in one or both partners, it becomes even more complicated to navigate the already intricate tango!

The South Florida Community for Emotionally Focused Therapy is excited to host this brand new ICEEFT-approved masterclass to address this obstacle.

ADHD is a condition that affects the executive functioning part of the brain, which manages our working memory, ability to focus, ability to plan, stay organized, finish what we started, and regulate emotions, among other things. Furthermore, for ADHD-affected individuals, those difficulties can be a fundamental impairment in many areas of life, including their relationships. In fact, there is scientific evidence that couples in which one or both parties have ADHD report less satisfying relationships than when compared to a couple without ADHD

It is not uncommon for individuals to be undiagnosed until later in adulthood. By this time, the relationship is often already profoundly affected. Their partners often have a litany of complaints including that their partner is being:
  • Inattentive
  • Not present
  • Disorganized
  • Inconsistent
  • Emotionally unstable
  • Unreliable

Given the ADHD partner’s challenges with being present, navigating executive function tasks, being predictable in their behaviors and emotions, it often compromises the safety and security of the attachment bond. As such, the non -ADHD partner reports feeling forgotten, unimportant as well as frustrated in their having to carry a more significant share of the load. Alternatively, the ADHD partner will describe themselves as the recipient of complaints, blame and criticism, which further affects the self-esteem and fragile connection. Recognizing the role ADHD plays in the relational dynamic is crucial to transform anger into empathy, develop strategies to manage its impact better, and stay united against it.

In this training, you will learn exactly how to assess the manifestations of ADHD and how they impact emotions and the romantic bond in a relationship. You will learn to track the ADHD-impacted cycle in a non-pathologizing way and look for the often-surprising primary emotions that are often well-hidden by ADHD partners. You will see video clips of ADHD-impacted couples sharing their felt experiences of the relationship with the therapist using standard EFT interventions such as tracking the cycle, empathically reflecting, validating, and assembling emotions.

This training will help therapists learn how to work with ADHD within the Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) framework through all three stages and the additional interventions necessary to help a couple not only cope but grow and thrive.
Program Objectives:
  1. Identify the symptoms of ADHD and the way the ADHD brain functions
  2. Recognize the manifestations of ADHD in the couple’s dynamic and its impact on romantic relationships
  3. Demonstrate how partners externalize the problem and understand the role ADHD has in their cycle
  4. Recognize primary emotions typical in couples impacted by ADHD
  5. Describe the principles of EFT to work towards de-escalation while weaving psycho-education and normalizing information into interventions
  6. Identify the EFT principles through all three EFT treatment stages when ADHD is present, and what additional interventions are helpful and resourceful to the couple.
